The 2013 Anton de Bary Medal Prize Laureate: Prof. Dr. Jürgen Kranz

Crop biotic stresses (DPG Session) The Board of the German Society Phytomedicine (DPG -Deutschen Phytomedizinischen Gesellschaft) as part of Tropentag, organized an award ceremony to celebrate one of its member with outstanding scientific achievements in the field of Phytomedicine. The 2013 Anton de Bary Medal was presented to Prof. Dr. Jürgen Kranz in recognition for his scientific work in the areas of tropical and subtropical plant pathology and epidemiology of pathogens. The award consists of a medal named Anton de Bary on one side and bears the name of the award winner on the back, and a certificate that contains the focus of the presentation Anton de Bary_MedailleAnton de Bary_Medaille1 The 2013 Anton de Bary Medal ("http://dpg.phytomedizin.org/de/die-dpg/auszeichnungen-preise/") He worked at the Institute of Tropical Medicine of the University of Giessen, and was also Director of Phytopathology and Applied Entomology. Prof. Kranz could be considered an all-rounder, as he has worked in research, teaching and in many international organizations in the area Phytomedicine. He has had most of his research work published in over 200 publications, and has contributed greatly in his areas of study which include, diseases, pests and weeds in tropical crops, as well as in epidemics of plant diseases. He developed fundamental insights into the parameters determining the dynamics of fungal epidemics and formed the basis for simulation models. Moreover, other factors that further distinguishes Prof. Kranz from the rest include his immense network with other institutions and countries abroad, scientific collaborations with numerous highly reputable institutes, working as a consultant and advisor for major national and international organizations. Apart from Anton de Bary medal, what else crowns it all for a scientist than to have a greater recognition from your peers to the extent of having two fungus named after him; Stigmina kranzii (1976) and Scolecostigmina kranzii(1999), are some of the fungus named after Prof. Kranz.
