Sustainability is founded on the three pillars: economics, environmentalism and social consciousness. The efforts to create a more sustainable conference at this year’s Tropentag cannot be unnoted.
I cannot attest to this year’s financial economics, but I can say, especially for student reporters, that Tropentag 2019 was extremely economic on energy. We were allotted a room with a central location, and helpful staff made sure we were kept in coffee supply at all times. When they found out some of us preferred tea, a kettle was brought right away. Many thanks!
Environmentally, the reduction in single-use plastic was huge! The reusable cups and change from the traditional plastic nametag were particularly brilliant! The programme was exceedingly helpful; organised in a logical manner, printed on 100% recycled paper, it contained everything from a welcome note to an overview to a what-you-should-know section and maps of all relevant buildings. The space to take notes was particularly appreciated, and key for cutting out the classic Tropentag note pad.
Socially, the coordinating and assistant staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Particular thanks to Martin Wiehle, Halyna Wichmann, Christian Wagner and Eric Tielkes, from the student reporters, for helping coordinate our first movements here as we settled in, and always being open to our questions throughout the conference.
Thank you, Prof. Dr. Eva Schlect, for your remarkable efforts to model this 2019’s Tropentag to be as sustainable as possible.
