Carla Roncoli is an economic-environmental anthropologist and member of the Center for Research on Environmental Decisions, Columbia University. She is currently Adjunct Faculty at Emory University and formely an Adjunct Professor in Anthropology at the University of Georgia.

She has worked with UNICEF in Nepal and Chad and consulted for numerous development organizations and International Agricultural Research Centers (IARCs). Dr. Roncoli’s research addresses the human dimension of climate change, with a particular focus on risk perceptions, communication, and management among African rural communities. It emphasizes the need for achieving a good “fit” between scientific information and technological innovations on the one hand and local knowledge, capabilities, and experience on the other hand.

Living on a (thin) margin

Tropentag 2011 will have a focus on development on the margin.

Watching the images and the video from Japan calls for a re-definition of our perspective on margin. There is no nation more modern and more organised than Japan, nevertheless the thinness of the edge on which modernity lives was revealed in the most striking way.

Call for proposals to the ESPA research programme

An opportunity for funding cutting-edge research that delivers improved understanding of how ecosystem function, the services they provide, the full value of these services, and their potential role in achieving sustainable poverty reduction was announced through the Ecosystems Services for Poverty Alleviation (ESPA).

ESPA's goal is to ensure that, in developing countries, ecosystems are being sustainably managed in a way that contributes to poverty reduction and inclusive/sustainable growth. This announcement of opportunity invites proposals for research consortium projects that will address this agenda.

All projects are required to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through the web-based form by the closing date of 8 December 2010.
