Room for Growth

If there is one thing that all of the presenters at the Tropentag 2015 guided poster session V on "Value Chain Analysis and Marketing II" agree on, it is the truth that there is a lot of room for growth, development and advancement in various stages of the value chain and in marketing of agricultural products in the tropics. fruits Although a large portion of the population in tropical countries are employed in the agricultural sector, studies show that agricultural production is either stagnant or declining in many regions. With the global quest for food security and poverty eradication, researchers are proffering solutions aimed at tackling relevant challenges and promoting expansion and growth in agricultural productivity. nizam Poster presentation by Nizam Husen Abdu. Social capital takes the centre stage in the poster by Nizam Husen Abdu in "Social Capital and Agricultural Technology Adoption among Ethiopian Farmers". He encourages policy makers, development practitioners and researchers to work within the social capital system of the farmers. His study also advocates the participation and empowerment of women in technology adoption. present1 Poster presentation by Amos Mensah The presentation by Amos Mensah on "A Multi-Output Production Efficiency Analysis of Commercial Banana Farms in the Volta Region of Ghana: A Stochastic Distance Function Approach" examines how farmers can improve their production efficiency and increase output without intervention. The study estimates a margin of improvement that will lead to an increase in profit and welfare of farmers. An average increase of 14% in output is found to be feasible if causes of inefficiency such as infrastructure, logistics and value addition are addressed. Jacob Asravor in his poster states that the maximum attainable yield in chili pepper production has not been reached by farmers in Ghana despite a high efficiency in input allocation (63%). A potential of 37% therefore remains to be attained. pres1 Jacob Asravor and his poster. In an attempt to promote the production and marketing of castor oil in Ethiopia, Tim K. Loos in "Castor Oil as a High Value Raw material Export Commodity for Smallholder Farmers - linking Ethiopian Producers to German Companies" expounds on the gaps that exist between local producers, producer groups and processers. He highlights the need for large scale producers and processers, increase in knowledge of best practices, wider access to improved seeds, and expansion of processing capacity that comply with high quality standards among measures that could promote the Ethiopian-German castor oil market. With so much potential and room for growth, Tropentag 2015 has not only provided figures and statistics but concrete ideas, suggestions and recommendations for the development of agricultural production in the tropics.
