Pigs won’t drive a car anytime soon, around 30 people learned, when listening to the presentations “Nutrition of monogastric animals”.
However highway median stripes might offer a future food source for livestock, the moderator of the session Uta Dickhöfer says. During the Tropentag oral presentations, these aspects were not discussed yet, but options for food supplements or substitutes, which according to Uta Dickhöfer stands in close relation to the conference’s topic of (peri-) urban agriculture. Especially in areas with a high competition for space concepts for efficient animal nutrition are necessary.
The presented topics caused a lot of discussion within the group. Questions raised by the audience addressed for example the issues of effects of
Moringa stenopetala Leaf Meal on the quality of meat, the availability of the suggested food supplements such as Fluted Pumpkin Leaf Extract or Potassium Diformate in the different areas of the world.
Beyond this and other research like
Urban Food Plus, Uta Dickhöfer sees a huge potential for further research on animal production and nutrition in the rural-urban continuum. In particular, the field of closing or scaling down nutrient circles should be further explored. In that regard, meat needs to be produced where it is consumed. Oftentimes this is in cities. Food for animals in the city should better be produced nearby, again due to high competition for space. Moreover, in cities other food sources might be available, such as communal leftovers. To sum up, research on animal nutrition in the (peri)-urban context won’t get boring anytime soon.
